5 Family Spy Movies & Shows We Bet You’ve Never Seen!

5 Family Spy Movies & Shows We Bet You’ve Never Seen!

Espionage, double crossing, sneaking into enemy territory. Our fascination with spies often has a dark twist to them, as these spies endanger their lives in order to get what they need from the enemy. That applies to most spy movies or shows, which have dark storylines, gore and even X-rated scenes. Thankfully, there are a number of spy movies or tv shows that are more than suitable for the families out there who wish to let their children experience the thrills of being a spy without actually being dark or violent. Here’s 5 spy movies & shows that are fun for the family to enjoy!

If there’s ever a movie franchise that perfectly fits what it’s like being a spy as a kid, it’s the fun and over the top Spy Kids franchise! Similar to many spy films, the Spy Kids franchise was influenced by elements of James Bond, but is told through the genre of family films. The franchise spans 5 films and even a short-lived Netflix animated series. The first three films follow two children, Juni & Carmen, who one day realize that their parents are former secret agents themselves. When their parents get captured, the children spring into action to rescue them. The fourth and fifth films follow two different families whose children would become spies themselves to save the world from evil. The films have all that you could ask for when it comes to being a spy! Cool gadgets, missions in a race against time, ridiculous villains as well as the family film notion of a sense of responsibility for each other’s actions. You can find the movies and even the animated series on Netflix.

If you think that being a spy is a job that is suited only for boys, well here’s an animated cartoon series that will prove you otherwise! Totally Spies is a French animated series that follows the adventures of three teenage girls who are Sam, Clover and Alex from Beverly Hills, California. From the outside, they look like normal everyday teenage girls, however they actually live a double life as secret agents working for the secret organization WOOHP or World Organization of Human Protection. The series has it all, exotic locations (including a famous episode that has them visit Malaysia!), vengeful and sinister villains and even awesome gadgets that are made to look like everyday items such as lipstick balm that can shoot lasers! The show first aired from 2002 to 2008 with a film in 2009. The series then took a short break before returning in 2013, with a seventh season planned for 2024. There’s no shortage of fun spy episodes here! You will need to search a bit to find the earlier seasons, but the later seasons are on Amazon Prime.

Even if you’ve never heard of Spy X Family, you would likely have seen the main star of the show Anya in your day to day life! Like many Japanese anime and media, Spy X Family started off as a manga series written by Tatsuya Endo, before eventually becoming an anime series in 2022. The series follows the agent Twilight, who disguises himself as the psychiatrist Loid Forger, as part of a covert operation to ease tensions between the two states of Westalis and Ostania. In order to complete this mission, he forms a fictional family with his adopted daughter Anya (who is secretly a telepathic) and a clerk named Yor Briar (who is secretly an assassin). While most spy franchises involve gadgets, this series focuses more on disguises and covert operations as well as the day to day life of the Forger family in-between. The series has received international popularity due in part to it’s action, characters, comedy and of course the adorableness of Anya! You can find the 2 seasons of Spy X Family available on Netflix.

When you think of Vin Diesel, you would definitely think of the Fast & Furious franchise, where he drives exotic cars, fights bad guys and talks about family, but did you know he once did a comedy spy movie back in the day? That’s right! In 2005, he would star in the family action comedy film, The Pacifier. If you think XXX or Fast & Furious may be unsuitable for the kids, fear not as this is one Vin Diesel film that’s fun for the whole family! Vin Diesel plays U.S Navy Seal lieutenant Shane Wolf who is assigned to rescue Howard Plummer. However the mission goes wrong and Plummer is killed. Wolf is then assigned to protect Plummer’s family. Here’s a spy movie with a spy who is out of his element! We see Shane having to deal with the repercussions of taking care of a family such as housekeeping, driving lessons and even diaper changing, all while trying to protect the family from evil assassins! As a family movie, there is a focus on the concept of spending time with your family, as Shane tries his best to keep the family together without the presence of their father. The movie is available on Disney Hotstar, Disney Plus and even on Google Play Movies.

Never thought that one day even guinea pigs can be secret agents, huh! G-Force is a unique spy film, in the sense that the spies aren’t even human! The film follows a group of highly intelligent rodents who are trained under a special government program to be espionage agents. After a failed mission, the program is shut down and the rodents are then captured, before escaping to stop an evil villain from unleashing a system that will destroy all of humanity. The film is unique for having not only an A-list cast of actors who are part of the movie (Penelope Curz, Nicholas Cage and even Zach Galifianakis all star in the film), but also for it’s use of 3-D at the time. The movie has all the tropes of the spy thriller, from espionage to double crossing to even an over the top chase scene involving hamster balls! If you’re looking for a fun, yet thrilling spy film for the kids, you can’t go wrong with G-Force! Unfortunately, the film isn’t available on streaming services, so you may have to rely on Blu-Ray DVDs to watch them.

And these are our top picks for fun and awesome spy movies and tv shows suitable for kids and families! Watching all these movies and shows would definitely make you want to experience what it’s like to be a spy, right? Well, if you’re eager, why not check out Spy Game Junior, available at The Shore, Melaka.

Spy Game Junior is the brand new gameplay where you and your kids will undergo training just like an ACTUAL SPY. Through this adventure, you and your kids will learn real-life SPY SKILLS and put them into practice, all that while creating unique memories as a family (of spies). Make your way to The Shore Melaka so you and your kids can begin the journey into becoming the Best Spy Family.

Exploring New Game Concept: Designing Spy Game Junior

Exploring New Game Concept: Designing Spy Game Junior

A new game experience catered only for kids. Something never before done by Breakout that incorporates the best elements of Breakout Spy Game that any 4-12 year old can experience and play. They didn’t think it was possible. Yet, they knew it was a challenge that they couldn’t pass on. It was an opportunity that only shows up once, and it was something that Zaynab Zakiyah Othman (Zay) and Chiang Jing An, who are part of the Game Design Team, knew that they had to take.

A New Game Concept? For Kids?!

The overall success of Breakout Spy Game meant that it was just a matter of time till one was created for children. Of course, that task would fall onto the hands of the in-house Game Design Team. But of course, this was going to be a first for the Game Design Team, as they never had any experience doing a game specifically for kids. What was their reaction to being assigned the task?

I took the challenge of designing Spy Game Junior with pride. It’s definitely an interesting and unique opportunity for me, as Superdough has never truly created a game experience specifically for children said Jing An.

How did I feel when Johnny gave me the task? My first thought was Oh no! Oh shit! Kids?! said Zay.

To say that they were given a monumental task would be an understatement. It’s one thing to create a game experience, but to create one that is family oriented, with a completely new flow? This is uncharted territory for them! Of course, they understand it very well, as everyone knows that working with kids is difficult and that they would have a long journey ahead of them.

Where Does It Begin?

The most important part of doing any brand new game experience is to do hours upon hours of research. Unfortunately, innovation comes with risk, as being the first to create a brand new experience means that there are no alternative game experiences to learn from.

We decided to begin our research with the most common kids activities available, which are playgrounds and children’s entertainments,” said Jing An.

Popular children’s entertainment outlets such as KidZania were top of the list for locations that could potentially inspire Spy Game Junior. Unfortunately, it seems that even with tremendous amounts of children’s experiences out there, there wasn’t an experience solely for kids, as most target everyone of all ages, or for adults only and mostly consisted of just activities that one does from room to room, rather than being immersive.

They knew that Spy Game Junior had to be the perfect blend of immersive experiences but still be enjoyable for the children and families. So, how does the team determine how the actual game concept would be?

We knew that overly complex tech and storytelling wouldn’t interest a child, so we had to do further research. We checked out children’s expos as well as kids’ entertainment to see what would attract a child’s curiosity”.

Zay and Jing An also took inspiration from their own childhood experiences to figure out what kind of puzzles and tasks would attract a child!

Growing up in a time without the internet, I remembered what we did to pass the time, playing games such as hide and seek, Simon Says and hopscotch,” said Zay.

Of course, not everything that comes up during the idea phase would work in the game setting. Whether an idea is too boring or too complex, the Game Design team always had to remember that Spy Game Junior must strike the balance between fun and challenging.

Children nowadays are very smart, but that doesn’t mean we can just automatically assume that all kids are brilliant or intelligent or that they would enjoy the experience” said Jing An.

Implementing, Feedback

Interviewing parents and families, it wasn’t a huge surprise that everyone placed an importance on fun. The Game Design had to figure out where the line is, as most of their experiences came from creating puzzles for adults, not kids! The easiest way to test was to test our sample activities with actual kids and gather their “feedback”.

Jing An said “What we learned is that each child is different. Some want it easy, some want it super hard and some want it balanced”.

It wasn’t just each children’s preferences, the location of Spy Game Junior posed another potential issue. With the outlet located in Melaka, there was a possibility that the intelligence level of children there may be different compared to those located in Petaling Jaya or KL.

Eventually, the conclusion was to implement a “Difficulty Level” that each customer can choose, therefore eliminating the issue of how to create a game that is fun but still challenging for all families.

Our Hopes That Spy Game Junior is A Success!

Spy Game Junior is only 2 months away, but the Game Design team is confident they can create a superb game experience for children.

When you look at our original idea and dream and compare it to what it is now, of course things have changed! There will always be improvements as we edge closer to it’s release” said Jing An.

As always, there will always be hurdles. Some systems and tech do not work greatly with one another, some graphics and in-game questions have to be tweaked and some ideas we thought would not work, ended up working or the opposite!

We thought that the hiding sections may not work, but during testing we found out the kids actually enjoyed it! ” said Jing An.

Still, at the end of the day, the project is very close to what the Game Design team originally envisioned, and more importantly, their experience with this project allows their work to evolve and be better.

It’s still quite early to tell how well-received Spy Game Junior will be, but the team have confidence it will be a resounding success! It was even an achievement for them to reformat the Melaka space that was originally going to be used for something else, to become Spy Game Junior!

All the hard work going into the research, planning and execution of the brand new Spy Game Junior will not go unnoticed, and whatever happens, the Game Design team will treat it as feedback to better improve their games and experiences for all to enjoy. Ultimately, it is a reminder that Superdough is about “Always Fun Experiences”!

Spy Game vs Escape Game: 5 Key Distinctions

Spy Game vs Escape Game: 5 Key Distinctions

Is Spy Game similar to Escape Game? We get this a lot from our customers as Breakout recently launched a new spy game concept and this has led to some confusion between the two. Do you need to solve puzzles in both these games? Are they the same? Or are they different? Worry not, as in this article we will answer these questions and the 5 differences and similarities that Escape Game and Spy Game have so that you can enjoy the most from these games after knowing what makes them unique!

1- Role Playing

SPY GAME
ESCAPE GAME

You will be required to gear up, wear earphones and be briefed by a spy leader about your mission and you’ll use gadgets when necessary!

There is less focus on role playing elements. You will just need to understand the story of the theme room and solve puzzles.

One of the primary differences you will see between Spy Game and Escape Game is how the two eperiences differ in how you roleplay!

2- NPCs (Non Playable Characters)

SPY GAME
ESCAPE GAME

There will be an NPC guard that will regularly patrol and investigate the rooms that the mission takes place in. As a spy, you must do your best at sneaking, hiding and disguising to avoid getting caught!

No NPCs or guards will interrupt your session as the game will only focus on you being able to solve the puzzles in time. The only “enemy” you’ll face is the clock!

Another difference between the Spy Game and Escape Game is the presencef a non-playable character.

3- Puzzles & Riddles

SPY GAME
ESCAPE GAME

You have a mission that you must accomplish. While there are puzzles in the rooms, you can bypass them by taking advantage of the guards’ timing to steal their keys or important items.

Puzzles are the priority in Escape Game, as you will need to solve them one by one in order to escape from the room within the time limit.

Both games have elements of puzzles in them. However, you may be surprised to know that the importance of puzzles is different between the two.

4- Physical Obstacles

SPY GAME
ESCAPE GAME

You must be physically fit as a spy in order to infiltrate the secure base or to avoid guards, so expect a heavier emphasis on physical activities in Spy Game! Each Spy Game mission has it’s own unique obstacle course which will test the players strength and skills in completing them as there are sensitive alarm systems that can be triggered if you do not complete it right.

There are less physical activities for Escape Game as the focus would be on puzzle solving. There are some mild crawling or climbing sections, but these are only done in order to progress from one room to another and are not a highlight of the game.

Both Spy Game and Escape Game are also different from one another in how they make use of physical activities.

5- Storylines & Themes

SPY GAME
ESCAPE GAME

There are multiple missions in Spy Game, ranging from rescuing your friend, to purifying a water system, to retrieving an item. All these missions relate back to the story of the Luddite cult. In Spy Game, Luddite is an anti – technology cult that is hiding sinister activities behind it’s doors and the spies must find out the truth!

In Escape Game, each room and theme has it’s own unique storyline and it’s up to you to decide which suits you! Be it stopping a criminal magician, bringing light back to a dark world or escaping from a mysterious cabin!

The last difference is in how Spy Game and Escape Game make use of their storylines and themes.

Now that you have an idea of what to expect for both Breakout Escape Game and Spy Game, make a booking today and tell us which you prefer!
